The Witcher tale: A must read

Geralt of Rivia

“Two things only the greatest fools do: throw stones at hornets nests… and threaten a witcher”

Geralt of Rivia

These days, I’ve been reading the Witcher novels, which take place in a fictional world. I am so amazed by the story and the complexity of the characters, that I can’t stop reading about them. The world of the Witcher hosts mythical beasts such as Griffins, ghouls, dragons etc. Also, magic exists in this universe and there are sorcerers and witchers that can use their own spells and techniques against others. The central characters of the books are Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri. Geralt is a witcher that kills monsters for a living.

Witchers are monster hunters that can use magic. In order to become a Witcher, you must be trained at a special school and pass the trial of the Grasses. Trial of the grasses was an incredibly painful ordeal to which young witcher apprentices were subjected. It required the consumption of special chemicals known as “the grasses”, which were mutating the bodies of the young apprentices. Yennefer is a sorceress and she is romantically involved with Geralt. These two have an explosive relationship and they have been on and off many times in the books. Ciri was the princess of a fallen Kingdom known as Cintra. Geralt and Yennefer are Ciri’s foster parents. Since these two were barren, they couldn’t have any children on their own, which is why they “adopted” Ciri.

The Witcher novels are about 8 books and their author is Andrzej Sapkowski, who is known as the Polish “Tolkien”. The first book (Sword of Destiny) was published in 1992 and many others followed this. They have been translated into numerous languages and they have sold more than 33 million copies worldwide. Many years after the publication of the first book, the Witcher games were released, which are based off these books. This is how I found out about Geralt in the first place. By playing these games (I’m certain that applies to most of you). The Witcher franchise is very popular among gamers, especially the third installation, that has numerous awards from various institutions.

The first two books of the series, are short stories of Geralt, which are introducing you to the world of Witcher. I would suggest to read them too, if you are interested in Geralt’s story. The main saga begins at the third novel (Blood of elves). The recommended reading order of the books is this:

  • The Last Wish (1993)
  • Sword of Destiny (1992)
  • Blood of elves (1994)
  • Time of Contempt ( 1995)
  • Baptism of fire ( 1996)
  • The Tower of the Swallow (1997)
  • The Lady of the Lake (1999)
  • Season of Storms (2013)

The last book is chronologically between the stories of the first book, but I suggest that you read it at the end of the series. The story is about Geralt and Ciri who are bound by destiny. Geralt had found Ciri in a forest called Brokilon, a place that was secluded from the rest of the world. Brokilon was the home of the dryads, the nymphs of the woods, which were hostile towards strangers and non-dryads. Ciri was the granddaughter of Calanthe, the Queen of Cintra. Calanthe had arranged for Ciri, to engage another prince, but Ciri wasn’t fond of the idea, which is why she escaped with the help of other soldiers. She ended up in Brokilon, where she stumbled upon a giant centipede over there. She started screaming and she was heard by Geralt and Braenn that were nearby. They rushed over there to kill the beast and help Ciri. Once they do this, Geralt is introduced to Ciri and they start to bond together. Afterwards, they are split apart for a while, but they reunite again. Ciri is the child of the Elder blood. There is a prophecy that claims that Ciri will change the world for better or for worse.

I won’t spoil the rest, but it’s a wonderful story full of political intrigues, battles, philosophical talks etc. If you’re fans of fantasy novels, then the Witcher books are just for you. I’ve grown to love the characters of these books and I really want to see the conclusion of that story(I’m still on the 7th book). In case you’ve never played the games, then I suggest to do this, dear friends! You ‘ll have tons of fun with these. Also, keep in mind that the Witcher show will air in a couple of days. Stay tuned! This is going to be an amazing December! Bye bye lads!
