Veganism vs Meat-eating

Hello guys, this is one of the hottest topics these days. Lots of people are switching to veganism, because they no longer want to eat meat that comes from animals or because they have a health issue and they had to make changes to their diets. Both vegans and carnivorists(Meat eaters) are supporting their views frantically. Which diet is healthier? What would benefit us the most? Are there any alternatives to meat-eating aside from veganism? Let’s have a look at some facts .

There are various studies about veganism and carnivorism. Some of them claim that a carnivorous diet is healthier, while others claim that a plant-based diet can benefit people. This can be very baffling to people like us, because we don’t have enough scientific knowledge to follow this debate. Let’s have a look at some of these studies to get a picture of what’s going on with these things.

NOTE: Vegeterians are the ones that don’t consume animal meat, whereas vegans are the ones that don’t eat animal meat AND animal products (Eggs, cow milk etc.)

According to nhs.uk, a research on vegeterianism claims that ‘Plant-eaters are ‘less healthy and have a lower quality of life than meat-eaters’. More specifically, the site states this: “There was an Austrian survey which simply took a group of 330 people put into a general “vegetarian” category (some in this category were not exclusively vegetarian). They were matched with groups of people from three “carnivorous” categories; ranked in terms of total meat consumption. The groups were then compared on a range of different health and lifestyle measures to see if any differences were observed. The researchers found various differences; both good and bad. The “vegetarians” had lower body mass index (BMI) and alcohol intake, but they also had increased prevalence of three chronic diseases: “allergies”, “cancer” and “mental illness” (source https://www.nhs.uk/news/food-and-diet/vegetarians-have-poorer-quality-of-life-study-claims/ ).

According to this study, there are pros and cons in veganism. The cons however, seem to outweigh the pros , because according to one of the findings of the study, vegans had higher rates of allergies, cancers, and mental diseases. Now let’s have a look at a different research about veganism. This study claims that vegans had higher levels of unsaturated fats and antioxidants in their blood and lower levels of saturated fats (These are good facts actually). https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/nutrition/vegan-diets-are-healthiest-according-to-new-study/ar-BBVM3tD

As you can see, it’s not clear if we should follow a meat-based diet or veganism. There are pros and cons in each one, but it seems impossible to choose a diet based on this factor. The only reason that you can switch to veganism so far is ethical, since we don’t know for sure which diet can benefit us the most. The meat we eat comes from animals that are grown in horrific conditions (most of the times). In addition, it’s certainly not a good thing to slaughter animals to eat them. However, this is how nature works, it’s not a human custom. Many other animals are carnivorous like us. Of course this doesn’t make carnivorism ethical, but this is a fact. I don’t know if I could stop eating meat and I don’t know if this is a healthy option. Meat is a great source of protein, but it’s not the only one. Let’s have a look at some other sources of protein that currently exist.

Meat grown in grass(!!!)

There’s an evolutionary method of creating meat artificially in the labs. Scientists are taking cells of pigs and cows and then they implant them in blades of grass. These cells are fed nutrients, which help them develop in muscle cells (This is what meat is actually). Eventually, the meat is grown and it can be harvested from the grass. This method is still on experimental level, but researchers claim that it could soon get into the markets. The meat demand is expected to rise and we need additional sources of meat. The major problem of this method is that it costs a lot of money. A company had spent about 250.000 $ to produce its first burger artificially. Scientists are trying to find more efficient ways of creating this meat, by dropping the cost of this commodity. According to world economic forum, cultured meat is just as healthy as natural meat, so there’s not much of a difference here. If this thing reaches the markets it can be a great alternative to people that don’t want to eat actual meat, but would still like to eat a substitute of this thing. Legumes (Beans, lentils etc.)

The Legumes are a very good source of protein. Beans are also called “the meat of the poor”, because of their high concentration in proteins. Legumes are rich in vegeterian protein and it’s not certain if they are the best substitute to meat protein. Some people claim that the animal protein is the best quality of this substance and it’s very vital to our survival. However you can’t be sure on those things, because there are many conflicting opinions that support different things.

Eggs

Eggs are considered one of the best sources of protein, as it is of high quality. Researchers used to believe that eggs are kind of unhealthy, but new studies claim that they are one of the healthiest foods you can eat. However, vegans do not eat eggs since they consider amoral to use the animals as sources of money . If you have become a vegeterian for ethical reasons, then eggs are out of the question, since the chickens that lay them are living in terrible conditions.

Mushrooms

I have to say that I’m not a fan of mushrooms even though they taste good, but I recently found out that they are rich in protein. They are yet another source of plant proteins, but like I said before it isn’t certain if it is healthy to live on plant proteins alone

Conclusion

Well, we still don’t know which diet is healthier for people. The studies that come out on these things have contradictory findings. It is obvious that you switch to veganism only for ethical reasons because they are the only ones that make sense so far. The meat that comes from animals has a big ethical cost and the conditions of these animals have to be improved for sure. In another post we will have a look at the conditions that these animals live. Alright guys I’m out! Bye bye!
